Nigeria's Digital Economy Demands More Platforms Like TechOff, Says Founder Olumide Sosanya
Why Nigeria Needs More Tech Platforms Like TechOff

Nigeria's Digital Economy Requires Expanded Platforms Such as TechOff, According to Founder Olumide Sosanya

Published on April 12, 2026, by Victor Enengedi, this analysis delves into the critical need for enhanced platforms in Nigeria's digital landscape. Olumide Sosanya, who ascended from Akure to global tech prominence, emphasizes that Nigeria boasts an abundance of tech talent, yet many young innovators remain overlooked due to geographic and network disparities.

The Visibility Gap in Nigeria's Tech Ecosystem

Annually, hundreds of thousands of Nigerian graduates emerge with ambitions to craft meaningful technological solutions. Across urban and rural areas, youth are self-educating in design, coding, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and various digital competencies. They ideate, experiment, and develop solutions addressing local challenges. However, Sosanya points out that talent often goes unrecognized, not from a skill deficit but from insufficient visibility, access, and opportunities.

Too frequently, a young innovator's prospects hinge on location, connections, or networks rather than capability. A gifted builder in Ikorodu, Ibadan, Akure, or Ile-Ife may face fewer chances compared to peers in Lagos, Abuja, or Port Harcourt, solely due to lower exposure. This represents a significant missed opportunity for Nigeria's digital economy, which frequently discusses youth empowerment and innovation but must prioritize nurturing the talent pipeline.

TechOff's Mission to Empower Emerging Talent

TechOff was established to discover, amplify, and empower emerging tech talent by providing visibility, support, and ecosystem access. Founded on the belief that in the AI era, everyone can build, it challenges the notion that innovation is reserved for a select few with technical backgrounds or elite access. Artificial intelligence and digital tools are democratizing creation, enabling students, designers, entrepreneurs, and creators to develop practical solutions.

The core issue shifts from potential to opportunity creation. Over three editions, TechOff has engaged over 800 participants and enthusiasts, partnered with more than five organizations, mobilized at least 20 industry experts, and distributed over ₦2 million in prizes. Beyond statistics, the impact is profound: participants have secured jobs, internships, mentorship, launched projects, and gained confidence, with some co-founding startups or advancing to mid-level engineering roles.

Strategic Imperatives for Nigeria's Digital Future

Nigeria's digital economy cannot thrive if talent clusters in few cities or privileged groups. Innovation will emerge from unexpected locales, where youth tackle local issues with global relevance. Unlocking this potential necessitates robust collaboration among government, private sectors, educational institutions, and ecosystem builders. Increased investment in platforms that enhance skills, visibility, and global connections is crucial—not as charity but as strategic foresight.

Countries and companies excelling tomorrow will be those identifying and scaling emerging talent today. TechOff exemplifies this action, but thousands more youths await discovery. To foster an inclusive, innovative, and competitive digital economy, Nigeria must move beyond questioning talent existence and focus on enhancing support systems. In the AI age, universal building capacity exists; empowering more youth will fortify Nigeria's future with innovation and prosperity.
