Flutterwave Secures Nigerian Banking License to Accelerate Payment Efficiency

Flutterwave, Africa's leading payments technology company, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a Nigerian banking license. This development empowers the fintech firm to directly hold funds and deposits, thereby strengthening its financial infrastructure in its largest market. The license is set to enhance the efficiency of financial services and settlement flows for a wide range of stakeholders, including consumers, businesses, and enterprises across Nigeria.

Enhancing Core Payments and Financial Control

The acquisition of this banking license significantly boosts Flutterwave's core payments operations. It allows the company to optimize settlement flows and manage funds more effectively within its ecosystem. Nigeria, as one of Africa's most vibrant financial ecosystems, sees trillions of naira transacted through digital payment channels annually. By integrating more directly into the regulated financial system, Flutterwave can further refine how money moves across its platform, improving settlement efficiency for its extensive network of merchants, businesses, and consumers.

Historically, global payment companies have relied on a sponsorship model, partnering with established commercial banks to access national clearing and settlement systems. While functional, this approach often restricts a fintech's innovation pace and necessitates sharing a portion of transaction value with sponsoring institutions. With this banking license, Flutterwave gains greater autonomy over fund movements within its ecosystem, including the capability to hold deposits and manage financial flows across its platform. Although Flutterwave will continue collaborating with banking partners in the broader financial ecosystem, the license enables the internalization of key elements in its financial value chain, leading to improved operational efficiency and faster product development.

Leadership Vision and Expanded Services

Olugbenga Agboola, Founder and CEO of Flutterwave, highlighted that this milestone allows the company to make its infrastructure more efficient and deliver faster, more reliable financial services. He stated, "By operating directly within the financial system, we can streamline money movement, accelerate settlement for merchants, and build products that support sustainable long-term growth." For over a decade, Flutterwave has facilitated payments for millions of Nigerians and businesses worldwide. With this license, the company is transitioning its infrastructure into a new generation of banking tailored for consumer financial services, such as seamless accounts, transfers, and payments within the SendApp ecosystem.

The license also supports business financial tools, including Enterprise Treasury Infrastructure, Digital Platforms, and Developers, where programmable financial infrastructure via APIs can enable the creation of innovative financial products. Over a million users of SendApp will now access enhanced financial services, such as personal account numbers and instant transfers, without needing to switch apps. Additionally, more than 2 million businesses can open accounts, manage payouts, run payroll, and utilize multi-currency capabilities.

Data-Driven Innovations and Security Foundations

Flutterwave plans to introduce data-driven financial services, including working capital financing and merchant lending powered by real transaction data, alongside treasury and savings products. The company's financial services infrastructure is built on a robust foundation of security and compliance, featuring PCI DSS Level 1 certification, SOC 1 and SOC 2 compliance, and enterprise-grade fraud protection. To date, Flutterwave has processed over $40 billion in payments and enabled more than 1 billion unique transactions.

Looking ahead, the company continues to explore new technologies, such as stablecoin-enabled settlement, to further enhance global payment efficiency and connect African businesses to the global economy. This regulatory achievement follows Flutterwave's recent acquisition of Mono, which strengthened its financial connectivity infrastructure, positioning the firm for continued growth and innovation in the fintech sector.
