A Nigerian man who mistakenly purchased 300GB of data for the wrong phone line has shared how he successfully recovered his money after the recipient refused to cooperate. The individual, identified on social media as @RidwanuLlah, detailed the incident and the steps he took to reverse the transaction.
The Mistake and Initial Attempts
The man explained that he intended to credit his own Airtel line, which ends with the digit 2, but inadvertently sent the data to a line ending with 6. Upon realizing the error, he contacted the owner of the number, a woman, to explain the situation. He sent her the transaction receipt, but she initially accused him of attempting to scam her. After further explanation, she claimed she could do nothing to help and told him to stop stressing her.
Strategy for Recovery
After the woman stopped responding to his texts, the man decided not to let the matter go. He contacted Airtel customer care, providing the transaction ID and other required details. The company reversed the N50,000 worth of data as airtime, allowing him to purchase the data again for his own line. He shared, "I called the customer care, gave them the transaction ID and other details requested, they reversed the 50k last night as airtime and I did my data all over. Good riddance."
Social Media Reactions
The story sparked widespread reactions on social media. User @Don_Chris22 humorously noted, "I was expecting you to say she called afterwards and ask why is she no seeing any data again." @youngsahito shared a similar experience, saying, "I've experienced such too and this woman refused to return the airtime. She even dey swear for me when you clearly get airtime that doesn't belongs to you." @femmejola praised Airtel's responsiveness, stating, "Wow! That's wonderful of Airtel. I didn't know they could do that." Others criticized the recipient's lack of integrity, with @ToluwalaseR commenting, "When we talk about integrity, many people are guilty of this. They don't think about the end result of their actions."
Broader Implications
This incident highlights a common issue in Nigeria where mistaken transfers are often claimed by recipients as a windfall. @Pharmzeezee remarked, "A lot of Nigerians are like this though. Especially when it comes to mistakenly crediting people's account. I have spoken to people who seem to think it's a blessing from God." The man's successful recovery serves as a cautionary tale and a guide for others facing similar situations.
