EcoSmart Club launches School Climate Action Week

A youth-focused environmental organisation, EcoSmart Club, has announced plans to engage secondary school students across Nigeria in a week-long climate action campaign designed to turn environmental awareness into practical community interventions. The initiative, named National School Climate Action Week, will take place from June 1 to 6, 2026, in celebration of World Environment Day.

Programme Objectives and Activities

Participating schools will implement projects centred on recycling, waste management, and sustainability advocacy within their local communities. The programme aims to move climate education beyond theoretical discussions and into concrete action, with students documenting their efforts through photographs and short videos. These materials will be compiled into daily “School Spotlights” that highlight youth-driven environmental solutions.

Founder's Vision

Hannah Omokhaye, Founder of EcoSmart Club, explained that the initiative was created to transform climate engagement from mere awareness into hands-on activities capable of influencing behaviour at the community level. She emphasised that the programme also seeks to nurture environmentally conscious citizens and future leaders by exposing them to real-world environmental challenges.

Targeting Secondary School Students

Project Manager Temidayo Arewa noted that secondary school students were deliberately chosen because they are at a formative stage where values and habits are still being shaped. Early involvement in climate action, she said, can foster long-term behavioural change that extends beyond schools into wider society. “The aim is to spark interest in climate responsibility early, so it becomes a lifelong practice with ripple effects across society,” Arewa stated.

Implementation and Reporting

Under the programme framework, schools will implement eco-friendly projects tailored to their local environments. Submissions will be reviewed and showcased as part of the initiative’s storytelling component, which is intended to amplify student voices and build a repository of locally driven climate solutions that can be replicated nationwide. After the exercise, EcoSmart Club will publish a report detailing participation levels, outcomes, and lessons learned. Certificates will be issued to participating schools, and selected projects will receive continued visibility.

Broader Impact

The organisers noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to integrate climate action into everyday school experiences, positioning students as active contributors to environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
