EDC, SMEDAN, AGRA, and Kaduna Business School Forge Alliance to Empower Nigerian Agric SMEs

In a significant move to bolster Nigeria's agricultural sector, the Enterprise Development Center (EDC) of Pan Atlantic University has entered into a strategic partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and Kaduna Business School. This collaboration is specifically designed to enhance the capabilities of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in agriculture, as well as Business Development Services Providers (BDSPs) across the nation.

AG-SME Bootcamp and Pitch Competition Highlights Impact

The partnership was formally announced during the recently concluded EDC AG-SME Bootcamp and pitch competition, a comprehensive three-day program fully sponsored for agricultural SMEs from various regions of Nigeria. Held in Lagos, the event had a clear threefold objective: to fortify Agric-SMEs, strengthen linkages with Business Development Service Providers, and improve access to finance for emerging young entrepreneurs in the agricultural space.

Dr. Nnenna Ugwu, Head of Alumni Relations and Support Services and a member of the EDC management board, addressed the participants, emphasizing the program's goals. "We want to watch great entrepreneurs who have applied for this AG-SMEs empowerment programme. Those who win will each receive a grant of one million Naira to boost their businesses," she stated. "They have gone through the Bootcamp, shared fantastic business ideas, and also showed that incredible people are playing in the agric space with innovative ways of doing business. So, that's practically why we are here, to select the best from the best."

Strengthening Capacity and Access to Finance

Dr. Stanley Ibeku, Lead for Research, Monitoring & Evaluation at the Enterprise Development Center, elaborated on the partnership's broader impact within the SME ecosystem. "We are here because the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Enterprise Development Center (EDC) of the Pan Atlantic University, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), and Kaduna Business School (KBS), have come together to strengthen the capacity of agric SMEs so that they access available financing as well as have that capacity to grow and scale their businesses," he explained.

Dr. Ibeku also revealed the outcomes of the grant competition, announcing, "We have eight grant winners, and the cash grant of N1 million each to the eight SMEs." Beyond the financial support, he highlighted additional benefits: "We'll also be providing business development support where we will engage business consultants who will work with these agric SMEs for three months, free of charge, courtesy of the project. These business development consultants will then help them to be able to take their businesses to the next level."

Beneficiaries Share Transformative Experiences

The program has already made a tangible impact on participants. Ms. Damilola Awojobi, CEO of Dainty Foods, praised the initiative, saying, "It has been impactful. I would say it's been eye-opening, those two words particularly, because my eyes were brought to see things again that I had formerly neglected as a business owner."

Another beneficiary, Dale Junaid, echoed similar sentiments, describing the experience as "amazing." He added, "Meeting some facilitators who took us on personal finance, access to finance, management, and bookkeeping was enlightening. I have personally learned a couple of things that would improve my business going forward."

This partnership underscores a concerted effort to drive growth and innovation in Nigeria's agricultural SME sector, combining financial grants with essential business development support to foster sustainable entrepreneurship and economic development.
