Edo State Commences 2026 Farming Season with Focus on Innovation
The Edo State Government has officially launched the 2026 farming season, urging farmers across the state to adopt innovative techniques and best practices to enhance agricultural productivity. The flag-off event, held at the State Agric Hub over the weekend, was led by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Jerry Uwangue, who emphasized the critical role of timely planting and the use of modern inputs.
Government's Commitment to Agricultural Advancement
Dr Uwangue highlighted that the event serves not only to mark the start of the farming season but also to educate farmers on the importance of early planting and the effective utilization of improved seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, and mechanized equipment. He stated, "Experience has shown that early and well-coordinated planting, combined with the use of quality inputs, significantly increases productivity, enhances crop yield, and ultimately guarantees food availability for our growing population." This initiative aligns with Governor Monday Okpebholo's SHINE Agenda, particularly in promoting economic growth and achieving food sufficiency.
Strengthening Agriculture as an Economic Backbone
The commissioner reiterated the government's dedication to bolstering agriculture as the backbone of the state's economy, ensuring food security, and improving farmers' livelihoods. He noted that the administration is committed to creating an enabling environment that supports farmers and agribusinesses, urging them to maximize the opportunities of the farming season. "The success of this season largely depends on your commitment, resilience, and willingness to adapt to modern techniques," he added, calling on local councils and agricultural extension officers to intensify efforts in mobilizing and educating farmers statewide.
Platform for Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing
Mrs Rebecca Osedebamen Bamaiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, described the event as a vital platform for farmers, agribusinesses, and partners to interact, access improved agricultural inputs, and gain valuable knowledge on contemporary farming practices. This collaborative approach aims to foster a more robust agricultural sector in Edo State, driving sustainable development and community empowerment through innovation and shared expertise.
