Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced a partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment to protect and preserve the state's ecosystem. During a meeting with Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the governor emphasized that environmental protection is a top priority for his administration.

Commitment to Sustainable Natural Resource Management

Governor Okpebholo stated that sustainable management of natural resources is essential for the state's development. He revealed plans to establish a committee dedicated to tackling encroachment in national parks and other protected areas. "The Edo State Government is ready to partner with the Federal Ministry of Environment to protect our environment and ensure sustainable development for our people," he said.

Collaboration on Environmental Policies

The governor assured the minister of his administration's willingness to collaborate on federal policies and programs aimed at safeguarding the environment. He stressed the need for collective action to prevent degradation of forests, wildlife, and other natural resources. "Preserving the environment is essential for the well-being of present and future generations," Okpebholo added, pledging support for initiatives promoting sustainability and conservation.

Minister Commends Edo's Leadership

Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal thanked the governor for his hospitality and commended Edo State's continuous support for environmental programs. He described Edo as a leading state in environmental management, noting that the state's Forestry Commission is the first of its kind in Nigeria. "Edo State has a Forestry Commission, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria, and this demonstrates the state's commitment to environmental sustainability," Lawal said.

The minister also expressed concern over the increasing threat of deforestation, warning that indiscriminate tree felling poses serious environmental and economic consequences. The partnership aims to address these challenges through coordinated efforts between the state and federal governments.
