EU Launches Major Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative in Nigeria with European Partners

The European Union, in collaboration with the Czech Republic, Austria, and Latvia, has officially launched the Twinning Project on Improving Food Security and Food Systems Using Climate-Smart Technologies for Enhanced Value Chains Development in Nigeria. This significant program, implemented under the EU–Nigeria Twinning framework, aims to deploy specialized expertise from these European nations to work closely with Nigerian stakeholders to advance climate-smart agriculture and strengthen sustainable food systems across the country.

Minister Abdullahi Highlights Climate Challenges and Agricultural Transformation

At the launch event for the EU–Nigeria Twinning Project on Improving Food Security and Food Systems Using Climate-Smart Technologies for Enhanced Value Chains Development in Nigeria, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, commended the EU and its member states for their commitment to bolstering Nigeria's agricultural sector. He emphasized that, like many nations globally, Nigeria's agriculture faces mounting challenges from climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, land degradation, and emerging pests and diseases, all of which threaten agricultural productivity and farmers' livelihoods.

Senator Abdullahi stressed the urgent need to fortify the nation's agricultural systems to become more resilient, productive, and sustainable, underscoring the critical importance of Climate-Smart Agriculture. He explained that this approach is not merely about reacting to climate change but involves transforming agriculture to enable farmers to boost productivity while safeguarding the environment and adapting to shifting climatic conditions.

He detailed that through this project, Nigeria will gain valuable technical expertise and engage in knowledge exchange with European partners. Additionally, it will support the review of the country's National Agricultural Resilience Framework and the development of technical guidance on climate-smart agriculture techniques, aiming to strengthen the policy environment and align it with international best practices.

EU Ambassador Mignot Emphasizes Institutional and Policy Support

The Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, highlighted agriculture's pivotal role in Nigeria's economy and activities, noting that the sector confronts significant hurdles such as climate change, environmental pressures, food insecurity, and structural constraints. She asserted that addressing these issues requires not only investment but also robust institutions and effective, well-implemented policies.

Mignot stated that the project will facilitate an aggressive review of the National Agricultural Resilience Framework Policy and related climate-smart agriculture policies. It will identify key gaps and provide practical recommendations to enhance implementation. The ultimate goal is to boost institutional capacity and ensure that policies translate into tangible technical improvements for farmers, agribusinesses, and communities throughout Nigeria. She remarked, "The twinning is a very powerful instrument that we've been using in the EU for decades now."

Director Tanimu on Collaborative Expertise and Resilience Building

In his remarks, the Director of Planning and Policy Coordination, Ibrahim Tanimu, noted that the Twinning Project holds particular significance as it unites technical expertise from European institutions with Nigerian professionals to jointly address critical areas of agricultural policy and climate-smart development. This collaboration is expected to translate into resilient agriculture that ensures food security in the country.

He added that the project responds to emerging challenges, especially those posed by climate change, food security, and the evolving global transformation of food systems. It will also assist in developing technical guidance on climate-smart agriculture practices, turning policy into actionable steps for farmers, institutions, and other key stakeholders across the agricultural value chains.
