Federal Government and Nestlé Nigeria Unveil Water Quality Handbook to Strengthen National Standards
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in a strategic collaboration with Nestlé Nigeria Plc, has officially launched a comprehensive Water Quality Handbook. This initiative is specifically designed to strengthen regulatory standards, enhance compliance mechanisms, and build substantial technical capacity across multiple sectors. The unveiling ceremony was conducted by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, during the 2026 Annual Water Quality Conference held in Abuja.
Conference Platform and National Campaign
The conference, themed “Water Quality in a Changing Climate: Policies, Innovation and Practice,” serves as a critical national platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge exchange among stakeholders dedicated to safeguarding Nigeria’s water resources. Professor Utsev emphasized that the handbook is a pivotal component of a nationwide media campaign focused on water quality awareness, utilizing radio and television platforms to disseminate information. He highlighted that this document will extend awareness efforts to grassroots communities, promoting safe hygiene practices and encouraging responsible water use among the populace.
Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources
During his address, Minister Utsev issued a stark warning regarding the escalating impacts of climate change on Nigeria’s water resources and quality. He cited altered rainfall patterns, a rise in extreme weather events, and mounting environmental pressures as primary concerns. Recent floods in various parts of the country and prolonged droughts in northern regions, coupled with pollution and rapid urbanization, have significantly degraded both surface and groundwater quality. Utsev stressed that water quantity and quality can no longer be managed separately, noting that flooding often introduces pollutants into water sources, while drought conditions can concentrate contaminants, exacerbating public health risks.
Integrated Approaches and Global Commitments
Addressing these multifaceted challenges requires integrated, science-based, and climate-resilient approaches. The conference will focus on key areas including the impacts of drought, flood, and pollution on water quality, the integration of One Health approaches into water safety planning, and building resilience against climate-driven contamination risks. Professor Utsev reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals, with particular emphasis on Goal 6, which targets clean water and sanitation for all.
Nestlé Nigeria’s Commitment and Corporate Perspective
Nestlé Nigeria, represented by Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Lead Victoria Uwadoka, delivered a goodwill message underscoring the company’s dedication to water stewardship. Uwadoka stated that water is fundamental to life, public health, and economic development, making it central to Nestlé’s purpose and long-term business resilience. As a leading food and beverage company, water is indispensable across their value chain, from responsible agricultural sourcing to the manufacturing of products distributed daily in Nigerian homes.
She emphasized that tackling water quality and access challenges necessitates more innovation, greater accountability, and increased collaboration among all stakeholders. Nestlé Nigeria reiterated its commitment to working with all parties to support national water and sanitation priorities, contribute technical expertise, and nurture partnerships that yield measurable, positive impacts.
Handbook as a Practical Resource
The newly launched Water Quality Handbook is designed as a practical resource for policymakers, regulators, industry practitioners, and community stakeholders. It aims to support informed decision-making and the consistent application of best practices to safeguard public health. This collaborative effort between the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector (OPS) marks a significant step towards ensuring sustainable water management and enhancing the quality of life for all Nigerians in the face of evolving environmental challenges.
