The global aquaculture community is celebrating a historic milestone as Nigerian aquaculture expert, Dr Foluke Omotayo Areola, officially assumed office as Global President of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS). She becomes the first African and first African woman to lead the international organisation. Her inauguration is regarded as a significant achievement for Nigeria, Africa and the Global South, reflecting the growing recognition of African expertise and leadership in global scientific and development institutions.

With members in more than 100 countries, the World Aquaculture Society is one of the world's leading professional bodies dedicated to advancing sustainable aquaculture development, aquatic food security, scientific collaboration and responsible aquatic resource management.
Dr Areola's Experience
Areola brings over three decades of experience in aquaculture, fisheries development, aquatic animal health and welfare, extension services, youth empowerment and food systems transformation. Her contributions have been credited with advancing aquaculture development in Nigeria and across Africa, particularly in extension services, fish welfare advocacy and promoting women's and youth participation in the sector. Before her election as Global President, she served as President of the African Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society, where she championed capacity building, scientific networking and regional collaboration.
Inauguration Speech
Speaking during her inauguration, Areola stressed the importance of adopting an inclusive and sustainable approach to aquaculture development. She said, "Aquaculture must serve humanity in a manner that is scientifically sound, environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, economically just, and ethically grounded. The future of aquaculture depends on partnerships that strengthen food security, protect ecosystems, improve livelihoods, and respect aquatic animal welfare."
Priorities for Her Administration
According to her, her administration will prioritise stronger collaboration between countries of the Global North and South, promotion of climate-resilient aquaculture systems, advancement of youth and women leadership, enhancement of aquatic animal health and welfare, and increased recognition of aquaculture in global food security and climate discussions.
Future Role
As Global President, Areola is expected to work closely with scientists, policymakers, development partners, private sector stakeholders and academic institutions across the world to help shape the future of global aquaculture. Her emergence has been widely described as a recognition of excellence and a step towards greater international collaboration in building sustainable, resilient and equitable aquatic food systems for future generations.
