Jigawa Council Approves ₦2.4 Billion for Agriculture, Education

The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved contracts and fund releases totaling over ₦2.4 billion to modernise agriculture, compensate citizens affected by urban renewal, and support girl-child education. The decisions were made during a meeting on 22 June chaired by Governor Umar Namadi, according to a statement by state spokesperson Sagir Musa.

₦273 Million for Greenhouses

The Council approved ₦273,293,272.50 for the construction of 20 type-II greenhouses across 10 Local Government Areas: Birnin Kudu, Gumel, Kafin Hausa, Kiyawa, Kasamma, Jahun, Malam Madori, Taura, and Sule Tankarkar. These facilities aim to transition farming from subsistence to high-tech commercial agribusiness, providing year-round controlled-environment agriculture for high-value crops. The initiative will scale up training for 82 youths who recently completed an intensive soilless farming programme at the Soilless Farm Lab in Abeokuta.

Over ₦1 Billion for Compensation

The Council approved compensation packages exceeding ₦1 billion for citizens whose properties and businesses are disrupted by ongoing modernisation projects. “The Council reiterates its pledge to advance public infrastructure while actively protecting the livelihoods and financial interests of host communities,” Musa stated.
