Federal Ministry of Works Bans Commercial Motorcycles and Tricycles on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
The Federal Ministry of Works has announced an immediate ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles operating on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, effective this week. The restriction, which also targets indiscriminate truck parking and refuse disposal, aims to preserve the newly constructed sections of the superhighway and ensure its long-term sustainability.
Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, disclosed the new measures in a statement on Sunday. He emphasized that the decision was necessary to protect the road from misuse and deterioration, describing the highway as a “world-class infrastructure” that requires proper maintenance.
Restrictions Extend to Bridges and Truck Parking
According to Dare, the ban applies not only to the coastal highway but also to all bridges across Lagos State. Additionally, indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles is now prohibited along the route. He warned that offenders would face strict enforcement measures as authorities move to maintain order.
Signage indicating the restrictions has already been installed along the highway, Dare noted. He also disclosed that task force officials would be deployed to strategic locations to ensure compliance. “These measures are necessary to preserve the road and ensure its long-term sustainability,” Dare stated.
Refuse Disposal Also Prohibited
The ministry further prohibits the indiscriminate disposal of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable. Dare urged all road users to comply with the directives in the interest of public safety. “Preserving the facility will enhance its lifespan and maintain its value to Nigerians,” he stressed.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a major infrastructure project that has seen significant investment. The ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles is part of broader efforts to protect the road from damage caused by heavy use and improper parking. The Federal Ministry of Works has reiterated its commitment to enforcing these rules to ensure the highway remains in good condition for years to come.
