Lagos Launches Tree-Planting Initiative with ₦2.5m Prize to Combat Heat
Lagos Offers ₦2.5m for Best Tree in New Environmental Campaign

The Lagos State Government has launched a new environmental initiative called "Me and My Tree," offering residents free tree seedlings and a chance to win ₦2.5 million for nurturing the best tree over one year. The program was announced at the 2026 World Environment Day celebration held in Alausa.

Initiative Details

Under the program, residents receive free tree seedlings from the government and are expected to care for them until maturity. After one year, the owner of the best-performing tree will receive the cash prize. This initiative aims to encourage environmental conservation and reduce rising urban temperatures in Lagos.

Addressing Urban Heat

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu, highlighted the urgency of addressing the Urban Heat Island effect. Rapid construction, traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and the replacement of green spaces with concrete have made Lagos significantly hotter than surrounding areas. This poses risks to public health, productivity, air quality, and energy demand, while also exacerbating flooding and sea-level rise due to the city's coastal location.

Broader Environmental Efforts

Beyond the tree-planting prize, Lagos has joined the United Nations Environment Programme's global "50 Cities at 50°C" campaign, which focuses on developing solutions to extreme urban heat. Lagos will participate under the theme "50 Cities at 50°C: Lagos Rising Against the Urban Heat Island." The state reports that it has planted over seven million trees since 2009 through partnerships with schools, communities, and businesses. As part of the Me and My Tree launch, 500 trees will be planted across Lagos.

Long-Term Strategies

The government is also investing in mass transit infrastructure, including rail, bus, and water transportation, as part of its longer-term emissions reduction strategy. The ₦2.5 million prize competition runs for one year from the date of planting.
