TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and Matrix Energy Group have successfully completed a significant seismic data acquisition campaign on Oil Mining Lease (OML) 100 and Oil Prospecting Lease (OPL) 2010. This achievement is expected to enhance subsurface understanding and support future investment decisions on these offshore assets.
Seismic Survey Details
The two-month 3D marine seismic survey was conducted by Shearwater Geoservices AS, a global marine and geoscience organization, on behalf of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and Matrix Energy Group. This marks a major technical milestone in ongoing efforts to unlock additional hydrocarbon potential in the offshore blocks. The program delivered high-quality three-dimensional seismic data using a towed-streamer configuration with an undershoot, a method designed to improve imaging beneath complex geological structures.
The acquisition campaign is anticipated to enhance reservoir characterization and reduce uncertainties associated with exploration and field development planning. Matrix Energy Group noted that the completion of the survey demonstrates its growing technical involvement in upstream operations and reflects a deliberate push to deepen in-house capabilities in exploration and production.
Management and Technical Visit
As part of this effort, Matrix Energy undertook a management and technical visit to the seismic acquisition vessel during the program. Representatives engaged directly with offshore teams on key aspects of seismic operations, including control room activities, streamer deployment systems, gun deck operations, real-time data monitoring, and onboard health, safety, and environment protocols. This engagement provided Matrix Energy with practical insights into the full seismic acquisition workflow, from data capture to preliminary processing, while also strengthening collaboration with project partners, according to a company statement.
The company said the exercise aligns with its broader strategy of building technical competence, fostering operational excellence, and supporting responsible value creation across Nigeria's energy value chain.
Future Implications
The completion of the seismic campaign is also expected to support future appraisal and development activities on OML 100 and OPL 2010, as operators move to interpret the newly acquired data and identify viable drilling targets. With Nigeria seeking to boost crude oil production and optimize existing assets, the successful delivery of the seismic program signals renewed momentum in upstream activities and highlights the importance of collaboration between international operators and indigenous firms such as Matrix Energy.
The next phase will involve detailed data processing and interpretation, which will ultimately guide investment decisions and potential field development strategies on the blocks.
