Niger State Authorities Arrest Two Foreign Nationals for Illegal Mining Activities
The Niger State government has taken decisive action against illegal mining operations by arresting two foreign nationals for their involvement in unauthorized activities. This enforcement move occurred during a strategic regulatory inspection at the Zuzungi mining site, located in the Katcha Local Government Area of the state.
Commissioner Announces Arrest During Site Inspection
Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mohammad Qasim Danjuma, revealed the arrests while conducting the inspection, which was part of intensified efforts to uphold regulatory standards. He was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, directors of the ministry, and representatives from relevant security agencies.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Minna by the ministry's spokesperson, Dibie Maureen, the commissioner emphasized the state's unwavering commitment to responsible resource management and institutional accountability. "This action reflects our dedication to creating a safe, transparent, and investment-friendly mining environment," Danjuma stated.
Zero-Tolerance Policy on Illegal Mining
Qasim stressed that the Niger State government maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining. He outlined strict compliance requirements for all mining operators, including:
- Adherence to licensing requirements
- Following approved operational guidelines
- Compliance with environmental regulations
The commissioner explained that safeguarding host communities, preserving the environment, and upholding the rule of law remain top priorities of the state's mining policy framework.
Suspects Handed Over for Investigation
The two suspects were immediately handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and necessary legal action in accordance with existing laws. This step ensures proper due process while sending a clear message about the consequences of violating mining regulations.
Alignment with State Development Agenda
The ministry's enforcement efforts align with the vision of Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago and the broader objectives of the New Niger Agenda. The inspection represents ongoing initiatives to protect the state's mineral resources from unlawful exploitation while promoting sustainable development through regulated mining practices.
This regulatory crackdown demonstrates Niger State's proactive approach to mineral resource management and its commitment to maintaining legal and environmental standards in the mining sector.
