Nigeria has taken a significant step toward promoting cleaner mobility with the introduction of a new training manual for compressed natural gas (CNG) systems and electric vehicle (EV) operations. The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), in collaboration with the Automotive Sector Skills Council, developed the manual to standardize knowledge and practical skills in the evolving automotive industry.
Presentation of the Manual
The manual was presented during a visit by members of the Sector Skills Council to the NADDC headquarters in Abuja. It aims to equip automotive professionals, training institutions, regulatory agencies, and certification bodies with the necessary expertise to handle CNG and EV technologies effectively.
Key Details from the Presentation
Best Nnodim, President of the Automotive Sector Skills Council, stated that the manual provides detailed guidance on CNG and EV operations, safety standards, conversion procedures, and maintenance practices. The CNG section comprises nine modules, while the EV section includes ten modules covering advanced technical and operational requirements.
Nnodim emphasized that the manual combines engineering expertise, industry regulations, safety requirements, and field experience to address the growing demand for skilled manpower in alternative fuel and electric mobility technologies. He noted that the EV section specifically supports technicians and workshop operators transitioning from conventional vehicle servicing to electric vehicle maintenance, which requires advanced electrical and diagnostic skills.
NADDC's Response
Otunba Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, Director-General of NADDC, commended the collaboration, stressing that structured training and certification are critical to building a competent automotive workforce. He added that the initiative supports Nigeria's broader drive toward cleaner, safer, and more sustainable transportation systems through local capacity development in CNG and EV technologies.
