Nile University of Nigeria and the Embassy of France in Nigeria have deepened their partnership with the commissioning of a Plastic Recycling Plant aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurial development within the university community.
Background of the Collaboration
The newly commissioned facility is part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between both institutions in 2023. The collaboration previously led to the establishment and donation of a state-of-the-art Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) to Nile University in 2024, underscoring their joint commitment to research, innovation, and sustainable development.
Official Remarks
During the commissioning ceremony, the Ambassador of France to Nigeria, H.E. Marc Fonbaustier, represented by Mr. Pierre Andriamampianina, described the plant as a flagship initiative under the French Embassy Fund. He stated that the project addresses plastic waste challenges on Nigerian campuses through innovation, capacity building, and entrepreneurship. “This project equips the university with tools and knowledge to transform plastic waste into valuable products, fostering environmental stewardship and creating economic opportunities,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor of Nile University, Professor Dilli Dogo, expressed gratitude to the French Embassy for its support. “We are grateful for this collaboration, which began with the FABLAB and now includes this Mini Plastic Recycling Plant. It aligns with our vision of providing practical skills and innovation-driven experiences,” he remarked.
Impact and Future Prospects
The recycling plant will serve as a learning and research hub for students and innovators to develop sustainable solutions within the circular economy. The ceremony was attended by diplomats, academics, students, and stakeholders committed to environmental sustainability. This initiative positions Nile University as a forward-looking institution leveraging international partnerships for sustainable development.
