NSE President Laments Infrastructure Decay and Rising Poverty in Nigeria
The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ali Rabiu, has expressed deep concern over the severe decay of infrastructure across Nigeria and the escalating levels of poverty among citizens. He called on engineers nationwide to take a proactive leadership role in tackling these critical national issues that are hindering the country's progress.
Call to Action for Engineers
Rabiu made this urgent appeal during the inauguration ceremony of Gradeone Ogheneovo Idama as the new Chairman of the NSE Ughelli Branch over the weekend. He specifically tasked engineers both within Nigeria and in the diaspora to rise to the challenge by implementing practical and impactful interventions aimed at mitigating these pressing problems.
Rabiu emphasized that the growing poverty, infrastructure deterioration, and social inequality in Nigerian communities require immediate and visible solutions, with engineers positioned at the forefront of these efforts. He charged NSE members across the country to proactively conceive, advise on, and execute projects that directly address essential infrastructure areas.
Key Infrastructure Areas for Focus
- Housing development and improvements
- Reliable water supply systems
- Sanitation and waste management
- Energy access and distribution
- Transportation networks and services
- Other critical community services
These initiatives are intended to enhance the quality of life and drive sustainable development within their respective communities.
Advocacy for Nature-Aligned Engineering
In a related development, Professor Omonigho Otanocha, a specialist in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Sustainable Production Systems, has advocated for Nature-Aligned Engineering to foster sustainable industrial transformation in Nigeria. Otanocha delivered the 13th Inaugural Lecture at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) in Delta State, titled 'Let There Be Light: Engineered Systems Response for Nature and Industrial Harmony'.
He urged policymakers, engineers, and industry stakeholders to adopt a development paradigm rooted in harmony with nature. Otanocha stressed that sustainable progress must integrate technological advancement with ethical responsibility and long-term environmental stewardship, moving away from purely production-driven models.
Pathways to Sustainable Industrial Transformation
- Embrace circular-economy principles to reduce waste and promote resource efficiency.
- Implement advanced manufacturing techniques that minimize environmental impact.
- Adopt global sustainability models to guide responsible and future-oriented industrial growth.
Otanocha highlighted the necessity of rethinking industrial progress through nature-industry harmony, emphasizing that innovation should be anchored on ethics, wisdom, and environmental care to ensure a balanced and prosperous future for Nigeria.
