Abia Governor Otti Vows 24/7 Power Supply to Boost Manufacturing
Otti Vows 24/7 Power Supply for Abia Manufacturing

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has reiterated his administration's determination to ensure a 24-hour electric supply across the state, emphasizing that manufacturers spend a significant portion of their resources on alternative power sources. Otti made this statement on Monday at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos State during the opening ceremony of Invest Lagos 3.0, an event broadcast live on Arise News TV.

Focus on Electricity After Market Reforms

Invest Lagos 3.0 is a flagship investment program designed to connect investors and policymakers with opportunities across all sectors of the Lagos economy. Otti explained that his administration initially focused on transforming markets before shifting attention to electricity supply. He observed that markets were not functioning optimally due to insufficient power, prompting the shift to stabilizing electricity.

The governor noted that the establishment of Geometric Power in Aba, the state's commercial hub, by a private investor has improved the situation in some areas. He stated, "Today, Aba has an island that includes eight more local governments, literally out of the national grid. And Aba has been reinforced as an island. And they have 24-hour power as we speak."

New Agreements for Umuahia and State Regulation

Otti revealed that his administration recently signed an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to move Umuahia, the state capital, out of the company's control. Additionally, the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency has been established to give the state control over its power supply. "We believe that Geometric, at a maximum capacity of 188 megawatts, would have excess capacity. And we can just will it to Umuahia and other parts of the state. By God's grace, in a few years, we should also guarantee 24-hour power supply in Umuahia and other local governments," he said.

Otti emphasized the importance of reliable electricity, noting that energy accounts for 60 to 70 percent of costs for manufacturers and industries.

Progress in Healthcare and Infrastructure

The governor attributed modest results in healthcare, road infrastructure, and other sectors to a 25-year development plan established upon assuming office in 2023. He reported that over 400 roads have been built in the last three years, totaling about 864 kilometers, with an additional 82 roads measuring 211 kilometers ongoing. "We want to provide the enabling environment for our people to do business," he explained.

In transportation, the administration launched 20 electric buses in December, with another 20 expected from China next month. Otti stated, "We are trying to make it easy for people to move throughout the nooks and crannies of the state on good roads with reliable electricity."

Healthcare Investments and Medical City Plans

Otti boasted that Abia State has been rated the most health-prepared state in Nigeria in the SBM 2025 report, thanks to significant investments in healthcare. Over the last three years, 15 percent of the budget has been allocated to healthcare. The government has refurbished 277 primary health centers, functionalized 135, and hired about 800 healthcare professionals, some from outside Nigeria. Additionally, 70 hospitals are being rebuilt.

The governor revealed plans to end medical tourism by building a world-class Abia Medical City on 200 hectares of land. He noted that Nigerians spend $2 billion to $2.5 billion annually on medical tourism. "We are not greedy. We are just saying, if it is $2 billion, maybe $200 million should come to Abia State. So instead of flying to Dubai, India, Turkey, and other countries, just come to Abia State for the same quality healthcare service," he added.
