The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on safety standards, regulatory compliance, and capacity building in Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. This partnership is designed to improve industry coordination, increase awareness of safety regulations, and address challenges associated with renewable energy installations and inspections across the country.
Key Objectives of the Partnership
During the signing ceremony, REAN President Ayo Ademilua emphasized the need for a coordinated structure to ensure continuity, improve communication, and support joint inspections to discourage substandard practices within the industry. He highlighted the importance of continuous stakeholder engagement, industry awareness, and stronger enforcement mechanisms to reduce substandard practices and improve compliance with approved standards across the renewable energy industry.
Planned Initiatives
Ademilua stated that both organizations agreed to organize regular webinars, information sessions, and certification examinations for renewable energy practitioners, including REAN members. He said: “These engagements will focus on safety standards, certification requirements, inspection processes, mini-grid regulations, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) solar standards, and newly introduced policies within the renewable energy sector. The webinar series will also serve as a platform to discuss new policies, providing clear explanations of regulatory updates, implementation guidelines, and opportunities for stakeholders to seek clarification. To ensure effective implementation of the partnership objectives, both organizations agreed that the MoU must move beyond signing into active execution through a clear implementation mechanism.”
Broader Regulatory Collaboration
The engagement also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among regulatory and standards-setting bodies, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to harmonize renewable energy standards and ensure uniform implementation across the sector. In a statement, the Head of Communications, Oisereime Lloyd-Dietake, noted that REAN will continue supporting alignment efforts by regularly publicizing relevant set standards to ensure consistency and strengthen a unified regulatory approach within the industry.
This partnership reflects the shared commitment of REAN and NEMSA in promoting safety, professionalism, standardization, and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
