Nigeria's House of Representatives Launches Probe into Plummeting Farm Produce Prices
The House of Representatives of Nigeria has resolved to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the persistent and alarming decline in farm produce prices across the nation. This decisive action underscores mounting concerns regarding the detrimental effects on farmers' economic survival, national food security, and overall nutritional standards.
Urgent Call for Government Intervention
On Wednesday, April 22, the legislative body formally urged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to collaborate with relevant governmental agencies to urgently design and implement remedial measures. Lawmakers specifically proposed the establishment of structured off-taking arrangements and robust price support mechanisms to cushion the severe impacts of falling agricultural commodity prices.
The House further emphasized the critical need to strengthen essential agricultural infrastructure. This includes significant improvements in storage facilities, enhanced processing capabilities, and expanded market access networks. Key recommendations involve the expansion of strategic grain reserves and the development of additional agro-processing zones, aiming to drastically reduce post-harvest losses and stabilize market prices.
Motion Highlights Economic Crisis for Farmers
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Representative Bamidele Salam. In his presentation, Salam highlighted agriculture as a fundamental pillar of Nigeria's economy, vital for employment generation, sustaining rural livelihoods, and contributing substantially to the nation's Gross Domestic Product and food security framework.
Salam detailed a sustained and sharp drop in the prices of staple and perishable crops, including cassava, rice, and yam. He warned that this distressing trend has resulted in "monumental financial losses" for countless farmers who have invested heavily in essential inputs. These investments encompass seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, transportation, and labor, often financed through burdensome loans and cooperative schemes.
Systemic Failures Exacerbating the Crisis
The lawmaker identified several systemic failures that have worsened the situation:
- The absence of structured off-taking systems
- Inadequate and dilapidated storage facilities
- Weak national agro-processing capacity
- Poor market linkages and information asymmetry
These deficiencies have collectively exacerbated post-harvest losses and increased farmers' vulnerability to extreme market volatility and price manipulation.
Dire Warnings for National Food Security
Salam issued a stern caution that if the situation remains unaddressed, it could trigger a catastrophic chain reaction:
- Forcing smallholder farmers out of business entirely
- Reducing critical agricultural investment and overall productivity
- Deepening rural disengagement from farming activities
- Ultimately threatening national food security through shortages
- Leading to rising consumer prices and increased dependence on food imports
He further noted that disruptions in agricultural production and supply chains could severely limit access to affordable and nutritious food, thereby worsening malnutrition and food insecurity, particularly among Nigeria's most vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly.
Legislative Emphasis on Sustainable Solutions
Lawmakers unanimously emphasized the paramount importance of immediate government intervention. Proposed solutions include:
- Implementing effective price stabilization mechanisms
- Reinvigorating buffer stock programmes
- Creating structured commodity off-taking systems
These measures are deemed essential to protect the farming community, ensure sustainable agricultural development, and safeguard Nigeria's long-term food sovereignty. The investigation aims to provide actionable recommendations to reverse the current price collapse and build a more resilient agricultural sector.
