Rite Foods Limited has intensified its environmental sustainability campaign by taking climate education to schools and expanding its waste recycling initiatives to promote responsible environmental practices.
Environmental Awareness Programme
The company made the call during an environmental awareness programme at Opebi Grammar School, Lagos, organised to mark the 2026 World Environment Day. A similar environmental awareness programme was also held at Moslem Primary School, Ijebu Ososa, Ogun State. The event featured sessions on the circular economy, waste segregation, recycling and upcycling, as well as interactive engagements with students and a tree-planting exercise.
Importance of Educating Young People
Speaking at the event, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Rite Foods, Ekuma Eze, said educating young people on sustainability was critical to building a generation that is conscious of environmental challenges and committed to protecting the planet. He warned that rising carbon emissions and global warming were contributing to flooding, rising sea levels and changing weather patterns, stressing the need for urgent action.
“The environment is our collective responsibility. We must take deliberate steps to leave it better than we met it for future generations,” he said.
Waste-Is-Naira Initiative
Eze also highlighted the company’s “Waste-Is-Naira” initiative, implemented in partnership with Recycle Points, which enables residents to exchange used plastic bottles and beverage cans for cash while promoting responsible waste management. According to him, the programme is projected to recover more than 750 tonnes of plastic waste annually, with collected materials sent to recyclers and gradually integrated into the company’s packaging value chain.
He said the company has also adopted renewable energy solutions, energy-efficient technologies and other low-emission infrastructure to reduce its environmental footprint, while advocating greater government support to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy.
Partnership for Upcycling
Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of Kazih Kits Limited, Dr Chinedu Azih, said the initiative was designed to encourage children to embrace the principles of reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Azih noted that her company partners with Rite Foods to upcycle textile waste into school bags, creating economic opportunities for women while supporting education and environmental sustainability. She added that the collaboration demonstrates how partnerships can simultaneously promote climate action, livelihoods and sustainable development.
