The Rotary Club of Ikeja, operating under Rotary International District 9111, has conducted a sensitization exercise for market women in Ikeja, focusing on proper waste management and recycling practices. The event was organized in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and took place at Ipodo Market in Ikeja.
Promoting Circular Economy
During the event, the President of Ikeja Rotary Club, Olanrewaju Lawal, emphasized that waste should not simply be discarded but managed responsibly through sorting and recycling. She noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to encourage a circular economy, which aims to reduce environmental and health risks associated with improper waste disposal.
Lawal stated, "We informed them that properly sorted waste materials can be sold to recyclers, creating additional income while promoting environmental sustainability." This approach not only helps in managing waste but also provides economic benefits to the traders.
Donation of Waste Bins
As part of the outreach, two large waste bins were donated to the market to support the segregation and collection of recyclable materials. According to Lawal, these bins are expected to serve as designated collection points, leading to cleaner market spaces, improved public health, and increased awareness of sustainable waste management practices among the traders.
The collaboration between Rotary and LAWMA highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing environmental challenges. By educating market women and providing necessary infrastructure, the initiative aims to foster long-term behavioral change and contribute to a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
