SAPZ and IFAD Collaborate to Train Farmers on AGMIS in Abeokuta
The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones Programme (SAPZ), in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has successfully conducted a training session for farmers on the use of the Agricultural Market Information System (AGMIS). This initiative, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, is designed to improve farmers' access to real-time information and market data, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and operational efficiency.
Enhancing Farmer Operations Through Technology
During the training, State Programme Coordinator Kehinde Jokotoye emphasized the critical importance of this program for farmers' daily activities. He urged all beneficiaries to fully utilize this opportunity, highlighting that significant resources have been invested to boost their productivity and add value to their agricultural practices. The AGMIS system aims to provide farmers with up-to-date market insights, helping them make informed decisions and optimize their yields.
Yewa North Local Council's Complementary Initiative
In a related development, Dr Olusola Akinbode, Chairman of Yewa North Local Council, announced plans to distribute 30,000 seedlings of cash crops to farmers across the council area. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agriculture. The seedlings are climate-resilient and have been carefully selected to withstand changing weather conditions, with a maturation period of three years to ensure quicker returns on investment for farmers.
Akinbode disclosed that the distribution is scheduled for mid-April and noted that the council has already begun nurturing improved seedlings to guarantee quality and sustainability. He added that the council is not only focused on distribution but also on capacity building to help farmers meet global standards. Recalling previous efforts, he mentioned that 11,000 seedlings were distributed to farmers last year.
Alignment with State Agricultural Policies
This initiative aligns with the Ogun State Government's agricultural development drive under Governor Dapo Abiodun, particularly the ISEYA development agenda, which emphasizes economic growth through agriculture and sustainable development. By integrating technology training with seedling distribution, these efforts aim to create a more resilient and productive agricultural sector in the region.
