Solar Founder Lists 5 Checks Before Installing Solar Panels

Before installing solar panels at home or work, Nnorom Godwin Chidindu, founder of De-Dub Energy Supply, emphasizes that five simple checks must be performed. According to the solar company owner, bad installation is the real enemy of solar in Nigeria, contrary to popular belief that thunder is the culprit. Godwin attributes many user complaints to neglecting these checks before setting up their systems, panels, or batteries.

Thunder Is Not the Enemy

Godwin dismissed claims that thunder damages solar systems. He noted that many people believe this, but it is untrue. The real enemy, he says, is poor installation. He wrote on Facebook: "Thunder is the enemy of solar? That's what many people believe… but the truth is different. Thunder is not the problem. Bad installation is the real enemy of solar. Every rainy season, we see it… People shouting my inverter just got bad. My system stopped working after the storm. But when you check well… no proper protection was installed."

Five Essential Checks Before Installation

In his April 20 Facebook post, Godwin highlighted five things to ensure before any solar installation:

  • Proper earthing — this is your number one lifesaver.
  • Lightning arrestor — to divert strikes away.
  • Surge protector — to block sudden voltage damage.
  • Clean and professional wiring — no shortcuts.
  • Strong panel mounting — wind no go carry your investment.

He stressed that solar is a long-term investment and that correct installation ensures peace of mind for years. He warned against rushing into installation, reiterating that bad installation, not thunder, is the real problem.

Public Reactions

Godwin's advice stirred reactions on social media. Udochukwu Favour thanked him for the insights. Onyi Ernest Ikenwugu noted that sometimes issues occur despite full protection, emphasizing doing one's best. Francis Uma Onuoha suggested that shutting down the entire system is the best solution. Prince Orji Nnabuike advised clients to always shut down during heavy thunderstorms, regardless of breakers.

Nigeria's Solar Panel Imports

In related news, a report revealed that Nigerians spent N435 billion on 2.9 million solar panels in 2025. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, solar panels have become one of Nigeria's most imported goods, reflecting a steady shift to alternative power sources due to frequent blackouts.
