Governor Soludo Commissions 1km Naval Outpost Road in Onitsha, Funded by Philanthropist
In a significant development for Anambra State, Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo has officially commissioned the newly completed 1-kilometre road leading to the Nigerian Naval Outpost in the Odekpe community, located within the Ogbaru Local Government Area. This project, which was fully funded and executed by the industrialist and philanthropist, High Chief Anthony Ikenna Obele, also known as Okwunze Aguata, replaces a previously dilapidated stretch that had long plagued residents, especially during the rainy season when it became impassable.
Restoration of Dignity and Economic Pathways
Representing Governor Soludo at the commissioning ceremony, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze, highlighted the transformative impact of the road. He described the intervention as a restoration of dignity for the community, effectively re-opening vital economic pathways and enhancing human connections. Udeze emphasized that this project serves as a prime example of the success of the Public-Private Community Partnership (PPCP) model, demonstrating that shared responsibility between the state government and its citizens is the fastest engine for sustainable development.
Enhancing Naval Operations and Community Security
The Flag Officer Commanding the Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral SD Ibrahim, provided insight into a reality often overlooked by civilians: how poor road infrastructure can severely weaken military response times, strain personnel, and complicate operational efficiency. He noted that what was once a significant obstacle has now been transformed into a valuable asset, strengthening both mobility and morale within the naval unit. Additionally, Rear Admiral Ibrahim pointed out that the improved road infrastructure is expected to increase property values, enhance security measures, and ultimately spur broader development in the host community.
Philanthropic Duty and Recognition
For High Chief Obele, the completion of this road was driven by a sense of duty rather than a desire for public acclaim. Reflecting on his motivation, he stated that the project was fundamentally about prioritizing the welfare of the people of Anambra State. This commissioning follows Obele's recent completion of a 5-kilometre road in Ezinifite, Aguata, which was also commissioned by Governor Soludo in January 2026, showcasing his consistent commitment to community development.
In recognition of his ongoing philanthropic efforts, His Serene Highness, High Chief Jude E. Okasili, the Oduma Inyele VIII of Odekpe Ancient Kingdom, conferred the symbolic title of Field Marshal upon Chief Obele. This honor celebrates his pivotal role in ending years of isolation for the community, marking a new era of connectivity and progress.
