An African electric vehicle platform, Spiro, has announced a $215 million investment round to accelerate the deployment of its electric mobility and battery-swapping infrastructure across the continent. The funding builds on support from long-standing institutional partners such as the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA) and draws global capital from Europe and Africa, signaling growing confidence in scalable infrastructure-led business models in emerging markets.
Expansion Plans
Flora Limukii, Head of Corporate Communications at Spiro, stated that the company has moved beyond the proof-of-concept phase and is ready for pan-African expansion. The investment will support the expansion of the battery-swapping network, strengthen industrial and assembly operations, accelerate technology development, and facilitate entry into new high-growth African markets.
As Africa's urban population and mobility needs surge, electric vehicles and battery-swapping ecosystems are emerging as promising infrastructure and energy investment opportunities. Reducing dependence on imported fuel, strengthening energy sovereignty, and modernizing urban transport systems are strategic priorities, positioning EV infrastructure as a key pillar of economic resilience and industrial development.
Cost and Environmental Benefits
Operating a Spiro electric vehicle can reduce daily mobility costs by up to 40 percent, saving up to $2 per day compared to fossil-fuel motorcycles. A third-party life cycle assessment in Kenya showed that Spiro's electric bikes deliver a 72 percent reduction in climate impact compared to fossil-fuel motorcycles, equivalent to avoiding approximately 19 tons of CO₂ emissions over a vehicle's lifespan. The study also found an 80 percent reduction in ozone-depleting potential and a 20 percent reduction in particulate matter emissions, highlighting the role of electric mobility in improving urban air quality and reducing public health risks.
Strategic Milestones
Gagan Gupta, Founder of Spiro, noted that the past year marked a defining strategic milestone. Across seven active markets, the company deployed 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 smart-swap stations, turning sustainable mobility into an affordable reality. Spiro has become a major driver of local industrialization, value creation, and manufacturing, creating 6,000 sustainable direct and indirect jobs.
