Gateway International Airport Set for Major Expansion as International Flights Loom
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has revealed ambitious expansion plans for the Gateway International Airport, positioning it as a key hub for global aviation and economic growth. The announcement comes as the airport attracts interest from international airlines, with flights to London scheduled to commence this summer, marking a significant milestone in the state's infrastructure development.
Strategic Infrastructure Investments to Support Aviation Growth
During a recent inspection tour with Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, Governor Abiodun outlined comprehensive plans to enhance the airport's facilities. The expansion includes the construction of a state-of-the-art conference centre and a 550-room hotel, designed to cater to business travellers and host international events. This initiative aims to transform the airport into a multifunctional complex that drives commerce, tourism, and job creation across the region.
Abiodun emphasized that these developments represent a long-term investment in Ogun State's economic future. "We are building around the airport to ensure it supports commerce, tourism, and job creation," he stated, highlighting the strategic focus on integrating aviation with broader economic activities.
Cargo Operations and Domestic Connectivity on the Rise
The airport's cargo operations have already taken off, with Allied Air currently active and Ethiopian Airlines expected to begin flights shortly. Additionally, another European cargo operator is finalizing plans to start operations, further solidifying the airport's role in global trade. To strengthen domestic connectivity, Gateway Airlines, owned by the state, has acquired two Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft. These will service key routes, including Abuja and other major cities, enhancing travel options for residents and businesses.
Governor Abiodun expressed optimism about the airport's potential, noting that with sustained airline interest and increasing passenger traffic, it could soon rank among the busiest airports in Nigeria. This growth is seen as a direct result of the state's commitment to infrastructure that boosts economic activity and improves connectivity.
Air Peace Endorses Airport for International Operations
Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, confirmed that the Gateway International Airport meets all requirements for long-haul international flights, citing its adequate runway length and technical capabilities. This endorsement paves the way for the planned London flights and underscores the airport's readiness to handle increased international traffic. The airport was recently commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, adding federal recognition to its development efforts.
