The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on the movement of goods and heavy luggage on regulated public buses, including BRT, effective June 1, 2026. The directive was issued by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in a statement on Tuesday.
Reason for the Ban
LAMATA stated that the decision follows rising complaints from commuters about the growing habit of using public buses to transport bulky items and commercial goods. This practice has negatively affected passenger comfort, safety, and the efficiency of transport operations across the state.
Enforcement and Penalties
The authority warned that enforcement will be strict and uncompromising. Bus drivers found violating the directive will face immediate dismissal and blacklisting. Additionally, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points who facilitate the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception.
The resolution was reached after a strategic meeting involving LAMATA officials and heads of operations and maintenance from various bus operating companies. Stakeholders agreed that the practice had become disruptive and needed to be stopped to restore order and improve service delivery.
Broader Efforts
LAMATA noted that the ban is part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to enhance safety, efficiency, and passenger experience within the public transportation network. The agency urged transport operators, terminal workers, commuters, and residents to comply fully and seek alternative means for moving goods within the city.
Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, has one of the busiest public transport systems in Africa. Authorities say the transportation of heavy goods inside passenger buses has contributed to overcrowding, delays, and discomfort for commuters. LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to building a safer, more reliable, and commuter-friendly transport system for all residents.
