NCAA Issues Alert on Potential Flight Disruptions During Rainy Season

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a formal warning to air travelers across the country, advising them to prepare for possible flight delays and cancellations as the rainy season approaches. This announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about aviation sector stability and consumer protection.

Seasonal Weather Poses Fresh Challenges

Speaking with aviation journalists in Lagos, Mike Achimugu, the NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, highlighted that while flight disruptions have decreased compared to the last quarter of 2025, the upcoming rainy season could introduce new operational hurdles. Achimugu cautioned that recent improvements might be temporary, emphasizing the need for vigilance during periods of adverse weather conditions.

Optimism for 2026 Amid Fleet Expansion

Despite these warnings, Achimugu expressed optimism about the aviation sector's prospects in 2026. He pointed to recent developments, including the Nigerian Aircraft Acquisition and Investment Summit (NAAIS), hosted by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, where airlines secured deals to expand their fleets. Achimugu noted that the arrival of new aircraft orders is expected to enhance operational capacity and reliability.

Unresolved Issues from December Airfare Hike

In a related matter, Achimugu disclosed that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has yet to submit its findings on the controversial airfare hike during the Yuletide season. He reiterated his disagreement with airlines' claims that the price increases were due to higher government taxes, stating that he stands by his position that other factors were at play.

Communication Gaps and Consumer Redress

Achimugu identified significant communication gaps between airlines and passengers, urging operators to improve transparency and proactively inform travelers about disruptions. He also highlighted the NCAA's efforts to support consumers through multiple channels:

  • The NCAA complaint portal, which has seen increased usage, though some passengers face technical challenges.
  • Alternative options such as email and social media platforms for lodging complaints.
  • Ongoing public information campaigns to educate travelers and hold airlines accountable.

The director emphasized that while the NCAA will continue to assist airlines, operators must take greater responsibility for customer engagement and service delivery.
