The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a temporary suspension of operations on the Warri–Itakpe Train Service, citing operational challenges and technical advice from its engineers. The decision, which takes immediate effect, was made in the interest of passenger safety, according to a statement released on Wednesday, May 27.
In the statement signed by the Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation explained that the suspension would allow for a comprehensive assessment of the rail corridor. This assessment aims to ensure continued safety and improved service delivery on the route.
Operational Exigencies and Technical Advice
The NRC stated: “The Warri-Itakpe Train Service has been temporarily suspended due to operational exigencies and technical advice from our engineers.” The temporary halt is necessary to carry out critical operational assessments focused on ensuring safety, reliability, and enhanced service delivery.
Impact on Commuters
The suspension is expected to significantly affect commuters, traders, and civil servants who rely heavily on the train service as an alternative to road transport. Many passengers depend on the train for daily travel between Warri and Itakpe, making the disruption a major inconvenience.
Apology and Restoration Efforts
The corporation apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured passengers that efforts are underway to restore services as soon as possible. Updates on the resumption of operations will be communicated before the end of the week, the NRC added.
