The Southwest Development Commission (SWDC) has achieved a significant milestone by securing a provisional Rail Operating and Track Licence from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). This development is part of broader efforts to establish a comprehensive regional rail transportation system across the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
Project Scope and Coverage
The proposed rail project is designed to reconnect previously inactive and underserved rail corridors while introducing a modern network aimed at improving mobility and economic activities within the region. According to the commission, the planned rail grid will span 44 cities across the six South-West states: Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, Osun State, Ondo State, and Ekiti State.
Expected Economic Impact
This initiative is expected to strengthen regional integration by significantly improving the movement of passengers and goods across the South-West corridor. Officials believe that the rail system will serve as a catalyst for industrialisation, enhance supply chain efficiency, and unlock fresh investment opportunities within the zone. The improved connectivity is anticipated to stimulate trade, create jobs, and boost overall economic growth in the region.
Regulatory and Development Phases
The commission described the provisional licence as a major milestone toward the execution of the project. Additional regulatory clearances and infrastructure development stages are expected to follow in subsequent phases. The SWDC remains committed to working closely with the NRC and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this transformative rail network.
