Tax Ombud Seeks Media Help to Educate Nigerians on Fiscal Reforms
Tax Ombud Seeks Media Support for Fiscal Reform Education

Dr John Nwabueze, the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, has emphasised the critical role of the media in advancing the ongoing fiscal reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He called on journalists to assist in educating the taxpaying public about the functions of the Office of the Tax Ombud, particularly the process for filing complaints or grievances regarding tax matters and obtaining redress at no cost.

Speaking to business editors in Lagos, Nwabueze announced that the newly established organisation is set to launch its website and a toll-free call centre to improve access to its services. The office was created as an independent and impartial body to protect taxpayer rights, resolve grievances, and promote fairness in tax administration.

The chief executive stressed that the establishment of the office offers Nigerians a new opportunity to actively and eagerly participate in the country's economic development. According to Nwabueze, the creation of the office demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to a modern, people-focused tax system that balances domestic revenue needs with justice and due process. This, he said, would not only encourage voluntary compliance but also align with the broader reforms of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to reposition taxation as a tool for inclusive development and shared national responsibility.

Advocating for a fair, responsive, and just tax system, Nwabueze explained that the Office of the Tax Ombud acts as a bridge between taxpayers and tax or revenue authorities. It provides accessible dispute-resolution mechanisms that are essential for building public trust and effective governance. He commended President Tinubu for leading transformative tax reform rooted in fairness, inclusiveness, and sustainability to support revenue growth and economic prosperity.

During a question-and-answer session, Nwabueze clarified that his office neither determines tax liability nor replaces the courts or the Tax Appeal Tribunal. Instead, it was established to ensure that tax administration is conducted in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner. Beyond dispute resolution, the office plays a systemic role in identifying recurring issues in tax and revenue administration and recommending reforms to improve efficiency, fairness, and transparency.
