United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has expanded its fleet with the acquisition of two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, marking a significant step in its strategic growth plan. The airline announced that the new planes, registered as 5N-CFC and 5N-CFB, arrived at Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2) in Lagos on Sunday.
Aircraft Named After Nigerian Icons
According to a statement from the airline, the aircraft have been named in honor of His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe (Obi of Onitsha) and the late Professor Chinua Achebe, Africa’s renowned literary figure. Adedayo Olawuyi, UNA’s Chief Commercial Officer, explained that the naming reflects the airline’s commitment to celebrating Nigerian heritage and uniting people with pride.
Strengthening Fleet and Market Position
Olawuyi emphasized that the acquisition reinforces UNA’s growing fleet and solidifies its position in Nigeria and Africa’s evolving aviation market. The new Boeing 737-800NG aircraft are expected to bring increased capacity, enhanced comfort, and improved reliability to meet the rising demand for a seamless and premium travel experience.
Official Unveiling Ceremony
The aircraft will be formally unveiled on Thursday in Lagos at a ceremony attended by the Obi of Onitsha, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and other key stakeholders. “This aircraft is not just about expanding capacity; it is about telling our story, celebrating our icons, and uniting our people with a renewed sense of pride,” Olawuyi added.
