Wema Bank has issued a warning to its customers about fraudulent mobile applications designed to steal sensitive banking information. The bank urged customers to be vigilant and only download official apps from verified sources.
Fake Apps Target Customer Data
According to a statement released by the bank, cybercriminals have created fake apps that mimic legitimate banking platforms. These apps trick users into entering their account details, which are then harvested for fraudulent transactions. The bank emphasized that its official app is the only secure channel for mobile banking.
“We have received reports of fake mobile applications that are designed to look like our official app. These apps are not authorized by Wema Bank and are used to steal customers’ login credentials and personal information,” the statement read.
Bank Advises Caution
Wema Bank advised customers to download apps only from official app stores such as Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Customers were also warned against clicking on links from unknown sources or responding to unsolicited requests for banking details.
The bank reiterated that it never asks customers for passwords, PINs, or OTPs via phone calls, emails, or text messages. “Any request for such information should be treated as fraudulent,” the statement added.
Steps to Stay Safe
To protect themselves, customers are encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, monitor account statements regularly, and report any suspicious activity to the bank immediately. Wema Bank also urged customers to update their apps regularly to benefit from the latest security patches.
The warning comes amid a rise in cyber fraud targeting Nigerian bank customers. Financial institutions have been stepping up awareness campaigns to combat the growing threat of phishing and identity theft.
