Visa Launches AI-Powered Tools for Payment Disputes

Global digital payments company, Visa, has unveiled six new and enhanced dispute resolution services aimed at reducing the growing cost and complexity of payment disputes for merchants, banks, and financial institutions. The company stated that these tools, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and proprietary technology, are designed to improve visibility into fraud-related expenses, reduce operational stress, and help businesses redirect resources toward growth, innovation, and customer service.

Rising Dispute Volume

Visa disclosed that disputes remain one of the biggest friction points in commerce, increasing costs for merchants and financial institutions while frustrating consumers. According to the company, it processed 106 million disputes globally in 2025, representing a 35 percent rise since 2019.

New Solutions for Merchants

Among the newly introduced solutions for merchants is the Visa Dispute Resolution Network, which streamlines pre-dispute handling to enable merchants to resolve potential disputes before they escalate. Visa said the tool is currently available in a pilot phase, with general availability expected in late 2026.

The company also unveiled the Visa Dispute Recovery Manager, which automates dispute representation for merchants using generative AI responses and win prediction scoring to improve recovery outcomes. Visa noted that pilot expansion for the tool is planned for late 2026.

Another upgraded service, Order Insight, was designed to reduce unnecessary disputes by providing transaction details that help customers better understand legitimate charges. Visa added that an April 2026 update would enable merchants to use Compelling Evidence 3.0 within Order Insight to share evidence with banks on suspicious transactions, helping to reduce cases of friendly fraud.

Solutions for Issuers and Acquirers

For issuers and acquirers, Visa introduced Dispute Intelligence, a predictive AI-powered solution that supports case-by-case analysis using global transaction and dispute data from Visa's network. The company said the tool is already generally available.

Visa also announced the Dispute Doc Analyzer, which uses AI to simplify and speed up dispute reviews. According to the company, the solution provides issuers with summaries of merchant documents and key data in a structured format to assist analysts in making faster decisions. The issuer version is expected to become available in late April 2026, while the acquirer version, which can auto-populate merchant response questionnaires, is already generally available.

The company further introduced the Visa Dispute Case Manager, an AI-enabled platform that centralizes dispute management workflows across different card networks, from intake to resolution.

Industry Impact

Speaking on the development, Vice President and Cluster Head, Visa West Africa, Andrew Uaboi, said disputes continue to place pressure on all stakeholders within the payments ecosystem. "Disputes put strain on every part of the payments ecosystem, frustrating consumers while driving cost and complexity for merchants and financial institutions," he said.

He added that outdated technology has made it difficult to keep pace with evolving fraud threats. "When outdated technology cannot keep pace, fraud goes undetected. Our expanded suite of dispute services gives clients the visibility they need to focus on what matters most: serving customers, launching new products, and growing their businesses," Uaboi stated.

Visa said the new services form part of its broader effort to modernize payment systems and improve efficiency within the global digital payments ecosystem.
