CBN Wins Central Bank of the Year Award Under Cardoso

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been named Central Bank of the Year at the prestigious Central Banking Awards, often described as the "Oscars of Banking." Governor Yemi Cardoso accepted the award on June 10 in London, highlighting the dedication of the CBN team and the importance of continued reforms.

Remarkable Achievements in Turbulent Times

Since taking over a central bank mired in challenges, Cardoso has overseen significant improvements. The CBN's efforts have been praised for reversing years of financial mismanagement and unorthodox policies. Under his leadership, inflation has dropped to about 15 percent, foreign reserves have crossed $50 billion, and the gap between official and parallel market exchange rates has narrowed from 60 percent to about 2 percent.

Recognition from Global Institutions

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) welcomed the CBN's reforms, commending steps to build reserves and support market confidence. Christopher Jeffrey, editor-in-chief of Central Banking, noted that the award recognized the CBN's monetary policy reforms, FX market reforms, and clearance of over $7 billion in outstanding obligations. Additionally, Nigeria's removal from the Financial Action Task Force "grey list" and banking sector recapitalization contributed to restoring investor confidence.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi's Vote of Confidence

Former CBN governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who had earlier warned that Nigeria risked heading toward hyperinflation like Venezuela or Zimbabwe, endorsed the current reforms. His support underscores the credibility of Cardoso's policies.

Continued Reforms Ahead

Cardoso emphasized that the award is encouragement for more work. The CBN recently released new guidelines for financial holding companies, requiring stricter capital requirements and governance structures to enhance stability. The bank is also strengthening FX market surveillance and documentation standards.

Toni Kan, a public affairs expert, notes that Cardoso's disciplined approach and commitment to orthodox monetary policy have yielded tangible results. The reward for hard work is more work, and the CBN team remains focused on sustaining these gains.
