Nigerian Man's Failed Relocation Plan Leads to N10 Million Debt Crisis

A Nigerian man has shared a harrowing account of how his attempt to relocate abroad resulted in a devastating financial crisis, leaving him with over N10 million in debt while earning a modest monthly salary.

The Costly Dream of Relocation

The man, identified as @wealthHabib on social media platform X, revealed that his troubles began when he borrowed substantial amounts from multiple sources to fund his relocation abroad. When his plans unexpectedly collapsed, he found himself burdened with debts exceeding N10 million, despite earning only N85,000 per month at the time.

"When the relocation plan failed, it left me with more than N10 million in debt," the man explained in his social media post. "At that time, I was earning a monthly salary of just N85,000."

Debt Spiral and Legal Consequences

The situation deteriorated further as most of the loans came from digital lending platforms known for their exorbitant interest rates, along with debts owed to several individuals. The financial pressure became so severe that the man was eventually arrested and spent two nights in custody, which he described as his breaking point.

According to his account, the arrest and detention marked the lowest moment in his ordeal, creating overwhelming shame and despair about facing his family with the truth about his financial situation.

A Mother's Extraordinary Sacrifice

When his parents discovered his predicament, instead of condemning him, his mother intervened with remarkable compassion and sacrifice. She utilized over N2 million that she had saved for two building projects and sold some of her old gold jewelry to help reduce his debt burden.

"My mum stepped in like an angel," the man wrote emotionally. "She took every kobo she had saved, and a few of her old gold jewelry, over N2 million meant for completing her two building projects, and paid to reduce the heat."

He described this act as transformative, breaking something inside him in a positive way and providing the breathing space he desperately needed to begin rebuilding his life.

The Road to Recovery

Following his mother's intervention, the man's financial situation gradually improved. His salary increased to N150,000 monthly, allowing him to commit to repaying N100,000 every month without fail. He maintained this disciplined approach until early 2025, making significant personal sacrifices along the way.

"The road was brutal!" he admitted. "Discipline, sacrifice, many 'no' to things I wanted, I sold my TV and other possessions, but I refused to let my mum's sacrifice go to waste."

He credited his mother as becoming his biggest motivation to persevere through the challenging recovery process, transforming his perspective on responsibility and gratitude.

Social Media Reactions and Support

The man's story resonated deeply with social media users, who flooded the comments section with messages of support and encouragement. Many shared similar experiences or expressed admiration for his mother's selfless act.

One user commented: "May God ease your pain bro.. na my momsy be this.. be like she and your mama be twins.. Honestly I can't give up cos of my momsy."

Another added: "May Allah continue to ease your affairs," while others offered prayers for his continued recovery and expressed solidarity with his challenging journey.

The story highlights the risks associated with relocation attempts funded through high-interest loans and the profound impact of family support during financial crises. It serves as a cautionary tale about careful financial planning while celebrating the extraordinary sacrifices parents make for their children's wellbeing.
