The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion for its planned mass wedding programme, targeting 3,000 beneficiaries. The announcement was made by the Commander-General of the Hisbah Board in the state, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, during a press briefing on Monday, June 15, 2026, where he provided updates on preparations for the event.
Breakdown of the Expenditure
Sheikh Daurawa stated that the N1.5 billion allocation will cover various expenses, including the purchase of furniture, food items, dowry, and clothing materials for the couples. Additionally, each bride will receive a capital sum of N100,000 as part of the support package under the scheme.
Medical Screening for Prospective Couples
The Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, has commenced mandatory medical screening for all applicants. The screening aims to verify the health status of prospective couples and includes tests for hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV, genotype, and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Selection Process
According to Daurawa, over 5,000 individuals applied for the programme. After the medical screening, only 3,000 will be selected to participate in the mass wedding. He expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for initiating the programme and noted that the governor is expected to announce the official date for the event soon.
