Lagos State Unveils Ambitious Economic Projections for 2026 and Beyond
The Lagos State Government has officially projected that its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will surge to approximately N73.15 trillion by the year 2026. This significant forecast was announced during the launch of the Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) 2026, a comprehensive data document that outlines the state's economic trajectory and long-term aspirations, including achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2052.
Governor Sanwo-Olu Highlights Intentional Governance and Strategic Planning
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Kadiri Hazmat at the event, emphasized that the LEDU platform has evolved beyond a mere policy document. He described it as a guiding compass for the state's economic direction, shaping critical decisions and reinforcing commitments to building a prosperous Lagos. Sanwo-Olu attributed the rapid development and economic growth to what he termed 'intentional governance and strategic planning,' which are driven by data collected by key state agencies, particularly the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.
Despite facing global challenges, the governor noted that Lagos has remained steadfast, not because it is immune to difficulties, but due to its clear, disciplined, and foresightful responses, hallmarks of the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda. The theme for this year's edition, "Consolidating Resilience, Advancing Competitiveness, Delivering Shared Prosperity," directly addresses the current economic climate. Sanwo-Olu explained that consolidating resilience involves strengthening institutions, policies, and fiscal discipline to sustain progress.
Economic Expansion and Diversified Strengths
Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, provided further insights, stating that the state's economy continues to expand, with Nominal GDP estimated at N62.66 trillion in 2025. He highlighted that Lagos's diversified, service-driven structure, anchored in sectors such as finance, trade, transport, communication, construction, and technology, remains a defining strength that supports robust growth.
Data-Driven Development and Impact on Populace
Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Olumoh Saad Lukman, underscored the importance of data gathering in pursuing development initiatives that positively impact the populace. He claimed that "Lagos State is resolving Nigeria's problems," indicating the state's pivotal role in national economic advancement.
Commitment to Transparency and Accountability
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, emphasized that LEDU represents a commitment to transparency, accountability, and data-driven governance. This approach ensures that economic policies are grounded in reliable information, fostering trust and effective management.
Expert Perspectives on Lagos's Transformation and Future
Prof. Abiodun Adedipe, Founder and Chief Consultant of Abiodun Adedipe and Associates, expressed confidence in Lagos's significant transformation post-COVID-19, noting improvements across every element of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda. Meanwhile, Tayo Aduloju, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, advised that Lagos should ensure steady regulation to encourage Foreign Direct Investment, convert the state's attractiveness into improved productivity, and guarantee a fast and affordable transport system to support sustainable growth.
Overall, the LEDU 2026 launch marks a pivotal moment for Lagos State, showcasing its ambitious economic goals and the strategic frameworks in place to achieve them, positioning the state as a key driver of Nigeria's economic future.
