Lagos Govt: Industrial Harmony Vital for Economic Growth

Lagos Government Highlights Critical Role of Industrial Harmony in Development

Lagos State has emphasized the indispensable role of industrial harmony in driving economic growth and long-term progress, stressing that a stable labour environment is crucial for the state's development. The Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Afolabi Ayantayo, made this declaration during the opening of a two-day training session for labour union leaders at the NUT Pavilion in Alausa.

Training Focuses on Modern Workplace Demands

The workshop, themed 'Sustaining a Cordial and Harmonious Industrial Relations in the New World of Work,' was strategically designed by the ministry to bridge the gap between traditional labour practices and contemporary workplace requirements. In his keynote address, Ayantayo noted that the "future of work" has already arrived, accelerated by rapid technological advancements and the widespread adoption of remote work systems.

"The new world of work is no longer a distant future; it is our present reality," the Commissioner stated. "Driven by automation and the demand for rapid skill acquisition, this era necessitates a complete transformation in how we approach traditional work structures and expectations."

Call for Collaborative Partnerships

Ayantayo emphasized that for Lagos State to sustain its growth trajectory, union leaders must shift from adversarial positions to a model of collaborative partnership. He underscored that a stable industrial climate is not merely a preference but a fundamental prerequisite for achieving the state's broader developmental objectives.

Supporting the commissioner's perspective, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, described the training as a timely intervention. She highlighted that globalisation and evolving economic realities are creating a complex landscape that requires both employers and employees to exhibit greater agility.

Abidakun urged participants to convert the insights gained during the sessions into actionable strategies that promote workplace stability and enhance productivity.

Labour Leaders Applaud State's Approach

In response, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Lagos State Chapter, Abiodun Aladetan, praised the state's distinctive approach to industrial relations. He noted that Lagos continues to set a national benchmark by fostering an environment where government officials and union leaders engage as equals in a learning setting to ensure mutual progress and sustainable development.

This initiative reflects Lagos State's commitment to adapting to the changing dynamics of the global economy while maintaining a harmonious industrial climate essential for long-term prosperity.
