President Tinubu Warns Governors of Inflation Spike from Middle East Crisis, Calls for Support to Vulnerable Nigerians
President Bola Tinubu has issued a stark warning to state governors, stating that the escalating crisis in the Middle East could significantly spike inflation and erode the purchasing power of Nigerians. During a meeting at his Lagos home on Sunday, March 22, for Eid al-Fitr, the President appealed to the governors to provide more incentives to residents and prioritize care for vulnerable populations.
Appeal for Incentives and Resilience Amid Economic Threats
In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the potential economic fallout from the tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran. "We should care more for the vulnerable. I know this Middle East crisis will spike inflation and affect our purchasing power," he stated. He further highlighted that labor unions and other groups might demand increased support due to the effects of the Middle East war and crisis.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President's special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu urged the governors to remain steadfast and resilient. He called on them to translate their ideas and visions into policies and programs that directly impact citizens' livelihoods and to support the government in combating the "tyranny" of criminals.
Intensified Efforts to Tackle Insecurity
President Tinubu stressed that his administration would intensify efforts to tackle the challenges of insecurity across various parts of the country. He assured that the safety and well-being of citizens were key topics in his recent meetings held in the United Kingdom. "Your presence here today and the number show your sincerity, commitment and value for friendship and togetherness. The next phase of our struggle is staring us in the face, and that is the challenge of insecurity in the country," he remarked.
He added, "I am making all the efforts to ensure that we collectively share the joy of our victory over tyranny. Insecurity is an enemy of development, progress, and prosperity. I am glad you are all mindful of the challenge."
International Collaborations for Security Support
President Tinubu revealed that he has been actively pursuing international collaborations to enhance security interventions. He reported having a lengthy discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is collaborating with Nigeria for equipment and support. "I am also making frantic efforts to contact other nations," he stated, noting that one of the major discussions in the UK focused on equipment and support for security measures.
This meeting, attended by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors, underscores the government's commitment to addressing both economic and security challenges. President Tinubu's warnings and appeals highlight the interconnected nature of global crises and domestic stability, urging proactive measures to protect Nigerian citizens from potential hardships.
