Energy Dealers Drive Significant Reduction in Cooking Gas Prices Across Nigeria
The National Bureau of Statistics has released compelling data showing a substantial decline in cooking gas prices across Nigeria, bringing much-needed relief to households grappling with energy costs. The latest figures reveal that December 2025 witnessed a notable downward trend in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices, marking a positive development for Nigerian consumers.
Substantial Price Reductions for 5kg Cylinders
According to the NBS price watch report, the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas decreased by 1.20% month-on-month. The price dropped from N5,425.78 in November 2025 to N5,360.43 in December 2025. More significantly, when compared year-on-year, the price demonstrated a remarkable 25.31% reduction, falling from N7,177.27 in December 2024.
The state-level analysis reveals considerable price variations across Nigeria. Kaduna State recorded the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at N5,838.66, closely followed by Jigawa State at N5,825.09 and Osun State at N5,777.80. In contrast, Katsina State emerged as the most affordable location with prices as low as N4,855.80.
Affordable States for 5kg Cooking Gas Refills
The ten most economical states for 5kg cylinder refills in December 2025 included:
- Katsina: N4,855.80
- Gombe: N4,885.64
- Cross River: N4,891.00
- Edo: N4,905.01
- Abuja (FCT): N4,935.16
- Bauchi: N5,045.63
- Imo: N5,169.89
- Anambra: N5,276.25
- Adamawa: N5,578.16
- Kano: N5,579.10
Price Trends for 12.5kg Cylinders
The larger 12.5kg cylinders also experienced price reductions, though at a slightly different rate. The average retail price decreased by 0.74% month-on-month, falling from N13,538.79 in November 2025 to N13,438.90 in December 2025. Year-on-year comparisons show an even more substantial decline of 22.20% from N17,274.16 in December 2024.
For the 12.5kg cylinders, Abia State recorded the highest average price at N14,489.96, followed by Osun State at N14,444.50 and Delta State at N14,393.17. Once again, Katsina State proved to be the most economical option with prices as low as N12,139.49.
Regional Price Variations and Market Expectations
The NBS data reveals interesting regional patterns in cooking gas pricing. For 5kg cylinders, the South East region recorded the highest average price at N5,457.92, while the South South region had the lowest at N5,256.27. For 12.5kg cylinders, the South East maintained its position as the most expensive region at N13,664.79, while the North East emerged as the most affordable at N13,172.49.
Market analysts and industry experts anticipate further price reductions in the coming months. Olatunbosun Oladapo, the immediate past president of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, has expressed optimism about continued price drops. Recent reports from Abuja indicate that LPG is now being sold at N1,090 per kilogram, a significant reduction from N2,000 just weeks earlier.
This positive trend in cooking gas prices represents a welcome development for Nigerian households, potentially easing the financial burden of essential energy needs while contributing to improved living standards across the nation.
