Gas Shortage Triggers Power Cuts Across South-East, EEDC Apologises
Gas Constraints Cause Power Decline in South-East - EEDC

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) has officially identified gas supply constraints as the primary cause of the recent and noticeable drop in electricity supply across states in Nigeria's South-East region.

Official Statement Cites Generation Challenge

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, and disseminated to newsmen in Awka, Anambra State, the company's Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Eze, provided clarification on the issue. Eze explained that the problem originates at the generation level, where a shortage of gas has forced many power generating companies (GenCos) to reduce their output.

This reduction in generation has led to a lower system frequency on the national grid. To prevent a total system collapse and maintain stability, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has been compelled to implement load shedding, which involves deliberately cutting off power supply to different areas in rotation.

Impact on EEDC's Distribution Network

The consequence of this national grid issue is a severe reduction in the amount of energy allocated to EEDC's network. Emeka Eze confirmed that this shortfall has directly impacted the company's ability to provide stable electricity to its customers.

The effects are being felt across all areas served by EEDC's franchise operators. These operators include:

  • MainPower
  • TransPower
  • FirstPower
  • NewEra
  • EastLand

Daily service levels have been significantly affected, leading to extended periods of power outage for residential and commercial customers alike.

Stakeholders Working on a Solution

In his address, Eze sought to reassure the public. He stated that all relevant stakeholders within the electricity supply value chain are actively engaged in efforts to resolve the gas supply challenges. The ultimate goal is to improve grid stability and restore normal electricity distribution as swiftly as possible.

The company also issued a formal apology to its customers. "EEDC sincerely apologises for the inconvenience this situation has caused our valued customers and appreciates their patience and understanding during this period," Eze stated.

He ended the communication with an appeal for continued patience from electricity consumers throughout the South-East zone, assuring them that the problem is receiving adequate attention at the highest levels.
