KEDCO Introduces Digital Payment Kiosks to Simplify Electricity Billing
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has launched an innovative ATM-enabled self-service electricity payment kiosk, marking a significant step in its digital transformation strategy. This new system, unveiled on Friday, February 13, 2026, was developed in partnership with FUCIL Datatech Limited and aims to provide customers with a more convenient and efficient way to pay their electricity bills.
Customer-First Approach and Digital Strategy
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, KEDCO's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abubakar Shuaibu-Jimeta, emphasized that the project reflects the company's customer-first approach and commitment to improving service delivery. He stated that customer satisfaction remains central to KEDCO's operations, noting that business growth becomes more achievable when customers are adequately served.
"The deployment of these kiosks aligns with our broader strategy to digitize operations and simplify electricity payment processes for consumers," Shuaibu-Jimeta explained. "We evaluate every partnership based on its impact on customers, including how effective and convenient the solution will be."
Rollout Across Franchise States
The MD further disclosed that these payment kiosks will be rolled out across all of KEDCO's franchise states to ensure seamless vending and flexible payment options for customers. He reaffirmed the company's readiness to pursue collaborations that strengthen service delivery and support its ambition to operate as a world-class electricity distribution company.
In her remarks, Chioma Iwuagwu, Managing Director of FUCIL Datatech Limited, highlighted that the kiosk technology was specifically designed to provide secure, scalable, and innovative digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency while improving customer experience.
Background Context: Electricity Billing Trends and Challenges
This launch comes at a time when Nigerians have been paying more for electricity despite ongoing challenges with power supply. According to an analysis by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), electricity distribution companies (DisCos) generated a total of N1.13 trillion from customers between April and September 2025, despite widespread complaints about poor electricity supply and frequent power outages across the country.
The figures, contained in detailed monthly performance data released by NERC covering the second and third quarters of 2025, highlight the complex landscape in which KEDCO is implementing its digital initiatives.
Recent Labor Disputes
Additionally, KEDCO faced labor challenges in January 2026 when Kano residents experienced power disruptions after company workers embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare issues. Labor unions accused the company of failing to remit pensions and conducting selective promotions, though KEDCO denied these allegations, stating it had paid over 80% of agreed pension remittances and promoted 1,500 staff members.
The introduction of these digital payment kiosks represents KEDCO's latest effort to modernize its services and address customer needs through technological innovation, even as it navigates broader industry challenges and internal operational matters.
