NISO Identifies Causes Behind National Grid Collapse
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a critical unit within the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has officially disclosed the technical factors that precipitated the nationwide grid failure experienced earlier on Friday. According to detailed operational reports, the collapse was triggered by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV high-voltage transmission lines, compounded by the unexpected disconnection of several grid-connected power generation units.
System Disturbance and Immediate Response
In a formal statement released through its official social media channels on Friday, January 23, NISO confirmed that these combined incidents created a severe system disturbance, ultimately leading to the grid's collapse. The operator emphasized that restoration procedures were initiated promptly at approximately 1:15 PM, following established grid recovery protocols designed to stabilize the national electricity infrastructure.
Progress in Power Restoration Across Nigeria
As of the latest update, NISO reported successful power restoration to key regions including Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sapele, Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and specific areas within Lagos. Restoration activities continue progressively across other parts of the country, with efforts focused on returning full stability to the national grid. NISO has announced that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to determine the root and contributory causes of this significant disturbance.
Gradual Improvement in Generation and Distribution
Data obtained from the system operator indicates a gradual improvement in power generation as restoration efforts advance. At the time of reporting, seven generating companies were contributing a combined total of 1,118.80 megawatts to the grid. Distribution load allocation has also shown noticeable recovery, with the eleven electricity distribution companies (DisCos) collectively allocated a total load of 1,540 MW.
DisCo Allocation Breakdown
The allocation breakdown reveals varying levels of power distribution across the DisCos:
- Ikeja DisCo recorded the highest allocation at 350 MW
- Abuja DisCo followed with 270 MW
- Ibadan DisCo received 240 MW
- Eko DisCo was allocated 200 MW
- Enugu DisCo received 100 MW
- Benin DisCo obtained 70 MW
- Kano and Kaduna DisCos were allocated 100 MW and 150 MW respectively
- Yola and Jos DisCos recorded the lowest allocations with 30 MW each
- Port Harcourt DisCo had no allocation, standing at 0.00 MW
NISO has assured the public that restoration efforts will continue unabated until complete stability is restored to the national electricity grid, emphasizing commitment to resolving the technical issues that led to this widespread power outage.
