Power Firm Confirms Electrocution of Staff in Enugu, Launches Investigation
MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has officially confirmed the tragic electrocution of one of its staff members, Issac Dike, in Enugu State. Dike, who served as a linesman attached to the company's Ogui District until his untimely death, lost his life in an incident that has raised serious questions about safety protocols and unauthorized activities.
Details of the Incident
According to Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Communications at MEDL, the electrocution occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 3:25 p.m. The incident took place at a 300KVA/11KV/0.415KV distribution substation located on Giraffe Street within the Ekulu East Estate, also known as Zoo Estate, in Enugu State. Ezeh disclosed this information in a statement issued from Enugu, emphasizing that the company is committed to a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Preliminary findings indicate that Dike had traveled to the location with a driver assigned to his team. However, the driver has denied any knowledge of the specific work activity that necessitated their presence at the estate, as well as the identity of the customer who allegedly requested the service. This lack of clarity has prompted further scrutiny into the events leading up to the accident.
Investigation and Unauthorized Activity
Ezeh revealed that checks on the company's fault report log and its Complaint Management System (CMS) showed no record of any customer complaints from Ekulu East Estate prior to the incident. Additionally, there was no record of any approved outage request for work to be carried out in the area on the day of the electrocution. These findings suggest that the accident may have resulted from an unauthorized or illegal activity, raising concerns about compliance with safety regulations.
"Further investigation indicated that the deceased did not inform any member of his team about his movement to Ekulu East Estate for any work-related activity," Ezeh added. This breach of protocol has compounded the tragedy, highlighting potential gaps in communication and oversight within the company's operations.
Response and Aftermath
In his statement, Ezeh expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, "It is unfortunate that we lost him under such circumstances. Our hearts go out to his family, and we pray for the repose of his soul." Following the incident, Dike's lifeless body was carefully brought down from the high-tension pole and transported to the Emergency Unit of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) in Colliery, Enugu.
The case has also been formally reported at the Abakaliki Road Police Station in Enugu, with Dike's remains deposited at the morgue for further examination. MEDL has assured the public that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the electrocution and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety standards in the power distribution sector, particularly in high-risk environments like substations. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders are calling for enhanced training and stricter enforcement of protocols to safeguard the lives of workers and the community at large.
