Ogun State Introduces Comprehensive Youth Empowerment Blueprint with N10 Million Grants

In a significant move to address unemployment and harness the potential of its young population, the Ogun State government, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled a detailed youth empowerment blueprint. This initiative aims to transform the state's economic landscape by focusing on entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and vocational training.

Governor Abiodun Emphasizes Youth as Societal Bedrock

Governor Abiodun highlighted the critical role of youths in nation-building, stating that his administration prioritizes youth empowerment as a cornerstone for long-term prosperity. He explained that Ogun State, with one of Nigeria's youngest demographics, faces both challenges and opportunities in channeling youthful energy into productive ventures.

"Governments that seek long-term prosperity deliberately invest in youth empowerment. In Ogun state, we have placed youth development at the centre of the administration’s growth strategy," the governor was quoted as saying.

Key Components of the Empowerment Blueprint

The blueprint encompasses a multi-sectoral approach, including:

  • Financial Grants: Through the Ogun Youth Empowerment and Entrepreneurial Programme (OGYES), grants ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦10 million are available to support youth-led businesses in retail, manufacturing, technology, and services. The programme also offers interest-free digital loans to overcome capital barriers.
  • Digital and ICT Skills Training: Partnerships with technology training organizations provide training in software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, blockchain, and digital marketing. Initiatives like the CyberSquad Training and Ogun TechHub foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Technical and Vocational Education: All eight Government Technical Colleges have been upgraded with modern facilities, offering training in trades such as welding, electrical work, and carpentry. The €3 million Momas TVET Centre focuses on solar technology and electrical maintenance.
  • Youth Participation in Agriculture: Programmes like broiler production schemes and the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme encourage agribusiness, with the Soilless Farm Lab training youths in modern techniques like hydroponics.
  • Governance and Sports Engagement: Youth summits and leadership forums facilitate policy discussions, while sports tournaments and clinics help develop athletic talents.

Long-Term Strategy for Inclusive Development

The government views these initiatives as part of a broader strategy to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and inclusive growth. By investing in youth development, Ogun State aims to build a future driven by enterprise and leadership, reducing unemployment and fostering job creation.

This announcement follows earlier reports of a cotton garment factory in the state, projected to generate 250,000 jobs, underscoring the administration's commitment to economic transformation.
