Rotary e-Club of Maryland Empowers 52 Individuals with N10 Million Vocational Tools
In a heartwarming display of humanitarian service, the Rotary e-Club of Maryland Ikeja has successfully empowered 52 individuals through its flagship Star Project, providing essential vocational tools valued at approximately N10 million. This initiative, conceived by Club President Joyce Mary Seyi-Idowu, was designed as a strategic response to the pressing issues of unemployment and economic challenges in the community.
Transparent Selection Process and Beneficiary Details
The empowerment programme adopted a transparent and inclusive approach, utilizing a Google Form that was circulated across clubs within Rotary International District 9111 to reach potential applicants. Past District Governor Omotunde Lawson revealed that the club received 89 applications, from which 52 beneficiaries were carefully selected based on merit and need.
The project distributed a wide range of vocational equipment to support self-reliance and sustainability. The items included:
- 26 sewing machines
- 10 grinding machines
- 9 hairdryers
- 5 vulcanising machines
- 1 industrial gas cooker with a 12.5 kg cylinder
- 1 welding machine
According to Lawson, this initiative stands out as a unique intervention aimed at equipping entrepreneurs and skilled artisans with the necessary tools to build sustainable livelihoods.
Leadership and Community Impact
Representing District 9111 Governor Prince Henry Akinyele, District Governor-elect Bukola Bakare commended the club's leadership for extending its impact across all clubs in the district. She described the project as a true reflection of Rotary's commitment to "Service above self" and encouraged beneficiaries to use the equipment judiciously to ensure long-term sustainability.
In her remarks, Past Assistant Governor Ezenne Obiora applauded President Joyce Mary Seyi-Idowu for organizing such a laudable initiative targeted at improving economic growth. She urged beneficiaries to effectively utilize the machines to expand their businesses and extend similar gestures to others in their communities. Obiora also advised them to spread awareness about Rotary, noting that more opportunities would be available in subsequent phases of the project.
Inclusive Empowerment and Staff Beneficiaries
In a remarkable move to further expand the reach of this impactful initiative, three non-administrative staff members of Rotary District 9111 were also empowered with vocational equipment to support their personal skills and livelihoods. The staff beneficiaries include:
- Fadeke Esther, Facility Maintenance Officer
- Akorede Mopelola of the District Canteen
