Dangote Industries Limited and Sinoma International Engineering Co. Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) valued at over $800 million to expand the Dangote Cement plant in Itori, Ogun State. The expansion will double the facility's production capacity from six million to 12 million metric tonnes annually, reinforcing Nigeria's position as a leading cement producer in Africa.
The agreement, signed in Lagos by Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, and Lin Zhong, Chairman of Sinoma, marks another significant investment in Nigeria's manufacturing sector. Once completed, the project is expected to boost domestic supply, increase exports across Africa, and create new employment opportunities.
Expansion to Meet Growing Demand and Boost Exports
The expansion is designed to address Nigeria's rising cement demand while creating additional capacity for exports to African and international markets. It aligns with Dangote Cement's long-term strategy to enhance production, competitiveness, and export-led growth across the continent.
Dangote linked the investment to President Bola Tinubu's infrastructure development agenda, emphasizing the project's role in supporting national economic growth. He noted that the additional capacity will not only satisfy domestic needs but also expand shipments to other African countries, generating foreign exchange and contributing to broader economic development.
Vision 2030: Aiming for 100 Million Metric Tonnes
The Itori expansion is part of Dangote Cement's Vision 2030, which targets raising total production capacity to between 90 million and 100 million metric tonnes annually. This ambitious goal underscores the company's commitment to becoming a dominant player in the global cement industry.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dangote said: "This $800 million investment represents another bold step in our commitment to strengthening Nigeria's industrial base and reinforcing our leadership in Africa's cement industry. This project reflects our unwavering confidence in the Nigerian economy and our determination to contribute meaningfully to economic growth, job creation and regional trade across Africa."
Strengthening Partnership with Sinoma International
Dangote highlighted the long-standing relationship with Sinoma International Engineering, which has delivered several world-class cement plants across Africa over the years. He noted that the latest investment reflects the partners' continued confidence in Nigeria's economic prospects and their shared commitment to expanding industrial capacity on the continent.
The Itori project is part of Dangote Cement's broader expansion strategy focused on increasing production capacity, improving operational efficiency, and strengthening its export footprint. Upon completion, the upgraded plant is expected to become one of the company's largest production and export centres, supplying both domestic and international markets.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The expansion is expected to create numerous jobs during construction and operation phases, contributing to local economic development in Ogun State and beyond. It also aims to reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported cement, saving foreign exchange and supporting the government's industrialization goals.
Industry analysts view the investment as a positive signal for Nigeria's manufacturing sector, which has faced challenges such as foreign exchange volatility and infrastructure deficits. The project demonstrates the private sector's role in driving economic diversification and regional trade integration.
Conclusion: A Milestone for Nigeria's Industrial Ambitions
The Dangote-Sinoma agreement marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's journey toward becoming a major manufacturing hub. By doubling Itori's capacity, the project will enhance supply security, boost exports, and create economic opportunities, aligning with the country's long-term development plans.
As construction progresses, stakeholders will watch closely to see how the expansion unfolds and its impact on the regional cement market. With Vision 2030 in sight, Dangote Cement continues to position itself as a key player in Africa's industrial landscape.
